Apparently one of the solar panels was not doing it's job causing the button cell to slowly discharge. In any case, the old board is still here and the new replacement one restored my faith in Logitech but it does appear to be of the refurbished kind in that it does not have the pristine state of flatness of the original keyboard but battery stays charged and is going strong after over five years of use.

Overall Review: Update : Logitech sent a warranty replacement board. Imagine how many buyers will have to buy new cells or seek warranty replacement due to this minor flaw. They should indicate when the rechargeable cell was tested before boxing the product. Too bad because I am all for green solar moves toward the future.
